Have now successfully managed to get BiBTeX to do what I wanted it to do with my bibliography, right down to italicizing 'et al' in citations. Hurrah! First year report and research essay now all but done.

Note for those on my friends list who are likely to struggle with LaTeX at some point - there's a very helpful community filled with many LaTeX geeks ready to help. Take a look at tex_latex
