Am currently in Edinburgh, finishing the last part of a 3 hour lay-over before travelling north to Aviemore for my conference. Have, alas, been too burdened down by luggage to explore extensively, but did wander up from Waverly to the City Monument and spent a pleasantish hour there with the views and the Observer.

Yesterday was spent at Oysterband's Big Session festival in Leicester - I enjoyed the acts performing during the day, though none of them made a large impression on me. There was nice food, pleasant company, and excellent cider, so the afternoon passed well. Then Oysterband themselves came on to play the headline set, and were _fantastic_. A decent compromise between classics and more recent pieces, though they could have been mixed up better. It struck me that the lead singer (Steve Knightley) has a really lovely voice, which recordings don't really do justice to. I still highly recommend the band - their best-of album, Granite Years and a collaboration album called The Big Session are both available on Oxfam's music site, so if you're bored stream them and give it a listen.

Ah, well. Off to brave weekend rail travel. Engineering delays, here I come!

Nothing compares to live music, I would love to see Oysterband live. Alas, the furthest west they seem to travel is in Alberta. Next best is reading concert reports, thank you!

Sadly, I cannot seem to reach bignoisemusic.com, it is not loading. Foiled yet again. (Or I just think that my computer is not up to the task. Poor Bartleby)

Steve Knightley? Are you sure that's the name? Because, to the best of my knowledge, the lead singer of Oysterband has been John Jones for the last twenty years or so. Is he someone from elsewhere who was there for the session specifically?

Steve Knightley is the lead singer of Show of Hands who were also there and he did his song "Country Life" with Oysterband as an encore. [livejournal.com profile] quizcustodet is just confused.. :P

Dammit. I wasn't sure on that, and was thinking of adding a '?' only to decide against. But in my defense, _both_ Steve Knightley and the actual lead singer had really nice voices.

If it makes you feel better, I had not heard of Show of Hands before. I will have to keep an eye out for them now. (I am assuming that you are recommending them?)
